Turtle nesting season in Cyprus

11.08.2014

At the moment, it is a turtle nesting season in Cyprus, which usually starts by the end of August and lasts until the end of September. Turtles lay their eggs on most sandy beaches of the island. Many hotels have to relocate their sunbeds, umbrellas and other beach items during this period in order to keep the turtle nests safe.

All turtle nests are covered by a protective aluminum cage and marked with an attention sign asking not to touch or disturb it. At this time of the year, it is forbidden to install tents and other kinds of equipment that are used for camping and other beach activities. Also, no artificial lights are allowed to be used around beaches and dog owners are forbidden to take their dogs for a walk during this period. For the destruction of turtle nests there is a fine up to 17,000 Euros! However, you will rarely ever see anyone trying to do any harm or damage to the nests. Most of the people hold their breath while watching the cages and hoping to see some newborn turtles!
