Cyprus is ready to join the Schengen area in 2016

Cyprus is ready to join the Schengen area until August 2016, so the Cyprus Police Academy held a special training.

According to Giorgos Trifonidis commander of the Police Academy, in late August, will start training again, about 850 officers who will be trained on issues related to the Schengen Agreement. Already  11 training programs attended by 380 employees.

The Schengen area includes 22 of the 28 EU member states. Of the six EU member states that are not part of the Schengen zone, four, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Cyprus, are obliged by law to join the zone, while the other two, Ireland and the United Kingdom, is still possible to get around this issue. Four states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, have signed the Schengen Agreement, although they are outside the EU.
