Mold in Cyprus
Today we will talk about not the most
pleasant, but, unfortunately, familiar to many islanders topic: mold. Mold is a fungus, and
some species are extremely beneficial to humanity (penicillin for instance), while others can be quite dangerous to crops,
the respiratory system, and structural integrity.
If you have never lived by the sea before, this problem can be taken by surprise, therefore, especially when planning a relocation, it is important to know the enemy in person, what it is and how to deal with it.
The most common mold is surface mildew, which grows in warm, humid places like your bathroom, and on fabrics and books stored in damp basements. Mold begins with a gray or white powdery colony. If not removed right away, it will turn black or brown and often look like a buildup of soil. To check if the surface is covered with mold or just dirt, blot the stain with a cotton swab soaked in household chlorine bleach. If the stain lightens or disappears after two to three minutes, it is mold. If not, then it's probably just dirt. Mold can discolor and slowly damage surfaces, but there are much more dangerous forms that can damage the structure of your home. If you see black or green mold that is fuzzy or slimy, and the drywall or wood underneath is soft or crumbling, this is irreversible rot and the mold and damaged surfaces should be removed immediately.
How can you protect yourself?
First, ideally not to move into an already damaged home. That is why we always recommend moving in winter whenever possible, when this flaw is most noticeable.
Secondly, good to know some simple measures: evenly warm up the room, ventilate regularly, treat especially vulnerable areas, and immediately get rid of any mold hearth.
For serious mold problems, consider hiring a professional. Some molds are highly toxic, and even less dangerous molds can cause problems for anyone with mold allergies or respiratory problems.
