The largest Georgian monastery in Europe will appear In Cyprus
The idea of building a Georgian
monastery in Cyprus was discussed for many years. The territory was given free
of charge as a result of lengthy negotiations between the Churches of Cyprus
and Georgia.
12,295 square meters of land in the western part of Cyprus near Polis Chrysochousa is allocated for the construction of the monastery complex. The decision of this Synod of the Cyprus Orthodox Church was adopted on January 4, 2018. The future construction of the temple in Cyprus land was blessed by Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II. On this day, His Holiness celebrated his 85th birthday.
The Georgian monastic complex in Cyprus will be the largest in Europe, located outside of Georgia. The worship service in the church at the monastery will be conducted in the Georgian language.
