Amendments to Rental Law during the quarantine caused by Covid-19

The government due to the resent events affecting the country namely the pandemic of Covid-19 issued a decree which restricts the free movement of its citizens, closed all retail stores except those that provide essential goods and services. This decree has a serious impact to households and businesses so the government decided to freeze all evictions of tenants who fail to pay rent on time.

The Cabinet approved a bill which amended the current Rent Law, effectively making it illegal to evict tenants who fail to pay rent. This decision will be in force till the end of May.

Previously in January the Parliament approved a different amendment to this law which enabled landlords to evict tenants who deliberately did not pay rent and those whose rent payment was delayed for more than 21 days. This amendment made it so such issues can be settled out-of-court.

After a landlord files such a case a tenant has 14 days to pay his debt which will terminate evictions processes.
